{ Hello }

Hi, everyone! My name is Patrick Doherty and I'm in my fourth and final year as an Oberlin student. I'm originally from Walnut Creek, CA, which is nestled away in the eastern part of the San Francisco Bay Area. I am currently pursuing a degree in history and researching an honors thesis on the 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle and the fin de siecle in Europe.

Like most Obies, I find myself extraordinarily busy with activities that I love. There is no way that I can list them all here, but I'll try to highlight my major involvements.

For the last two and a half years I have worked for the Office of Admissions as a tour guide, intern, interviewer, and campus visit intern. Don't be surprised if you run into me sometime during your visit to campus! I also currently serve as the treasurer for Active Minds at Oberlin, a group dedicated to reducing the stigma against mental health issues on college campuses. Oh, yes, and I also take piano lessons from the lovely Lydia Frumkin, Professor of Piano in the Conservatory.

I love talking to prospective students and answering questions about my Oberlin experience. Feel free to get in touch with me if you have anything you'd like to chat about!

The Land of Fire: The Adventures of Patrick and Jordan

Our intern lunches became a regular occurrence - we would swap stories about the craziest things that had happened to us that day (so many crazy things, all the time), gossip about whatever was going on on the Hill, and, on one special occasion, Jordan nearly ran into and almost knocked over Dennis Kucinich in the cafeteria in the Rayburn Building.

What makes us different?

Brandi recently posted an inquiry on her facebook status: "Oberfriends: If you had less than 60 seconds to express how awesome Oberlin is to someone who knows next to nothing about this place, what/how would you do it?" I visited her earlier that day, and she asked me the same question.

A Long, Bumpy Road: My Journey to Oberlin

Several people have blogged about their journeys to Oberlin. I've decided to add myself to this ever-growing list. Partly because my journey was not what some of you might expect and partly because I've avoided telling this story in its entirety for far too long.
