Oberlin Blogs

Rose Stoloff ’15

Hello! I'm Rose. I'm a Berkeley, California, native, with a lot of Bay Area pride. I once heard Berkeley described as a "town in which half the people are seeking to overthrow the federal government and the other half are seeking the perfect croissant." It is, in a way, Oberlin's older cousin. I'm a second-year here, though Oberlin has been in my blood since I was born. My parents met in Noah during their freshman orientation back in the 80s; the rest is history. I always swore I would forge my own path, but one visit to Oberlin and I decided this vibrant and eclectic oasis in the middle of the cornfields of Ohio was a place I had to make my home.

I am studying both economics and politics and though I know those aren't the most romantic majors, I love the way they both complement and contradict each other and offer perspective on day-to-day affairs. Outside of class I like to cram my schedule full. I chop onions in Keep Co-op (I live there too), write about sports for the Oberlin Review, participate in the Responsible Investing Organization (no, it's really not as boring as it sounds — I'll have to get into this more later), and explore the surrounding area through long runs.

My favorite color is blue. My favorite animal is an elephant. My biggest regret in life is not learning ballet. I'm terrified of snakes. I am addicted to gum and coffee. I don't know how to sit still. My birthday is on Groundhog Day. I plan on someday teaching an ExCo called "Iron Chef: Stevie Addition." I have a really great dog named Louis. And a brother. If I could pick one superpower it would be super-speed. I love car rides, and flights and train journeys even more. I'm really short — it's a big part of my identity.

I'm not sure who or what I want to be when I grow up. If you ask me today, I'll have another answer for you next week. I love Oberlin because it gives me the freedom to bounce around and try out different things. I love talking about Oberlin and answering questions, so please, I beg of you, tell me what you'd like to know!

In honor of the end of April, the beginning of May, and the final day to make that great, final college decision, I decided to do a little survey. I sent out a mass email asking people why they...

They always say you end up like your parents. I can't say I didn't try. To avoid this, during my junior year of high school I flipped through the Fiske Guide to Colleges with fervor,...
