Keeping the Post Office in Business

January 7, 2009

Have you ever seen 16 bins of mail arrive on a single day?

Every January, our Office of Admissions reopens after the holiday break. And every January 2, the Post Office seems to relish clearing out their storeroom with bins of mail addressed to Oberlin's Admissions Office. Recommendation letters, transcripts and arts supplements galore! The Admissions staff is working feverishly to open all the envelopes and log the application materials into our computer system. To keep us energized, we often listen to the CDs applicants have sent us. Today, we heard Sanskrit Chanting, pianists performing Schubert and Rachmaninoff, a fiddling group, and vocal performances ranging from Vittoria, mio core to hip hop selections. I continue to be amazed by the talents of our prospective students.

Opening all of this mail is a process that invokes more than its share of paper cuts and requires some patience on your part. We will let you know if anything is missing from your application, but it will take us a little time to do so.

BTW, 12 more bins were delivered on the 5th!
