All Roads Lead to Oberlin is when you, sweet admitted students, visit and fall madly in love with this school. During the weekend, there's a lot of official events: resource fairs, classes, panels, and tours. And then, as sun falls, the fun starts and there's a million more things to do.
Enter this, your handy-dandy Guide to All Roads. The events are mostly my friends' recommendations and things I'm planning on doing this weekend. This list is not exclusive, but a good place to start. I revised it from last week, so it's new and different. Ooooh. Ahhh.
FRIDAY | April 16th
Tip 1: Space... is big. Really big.
This weekend is insane. There are three big conferences -- Improv Theater, Contra Dance, the Design Symposium -- and a film festival. In the words of our generation: WUT. Campus will be filled with dancers, actors, comedians, designers, fashionable folks, and you.
Jazz Forum: The Myers, Indenbaum, & Wise Ensembles | 12:00pm | Cat in the Cream
Sam Indenbaum is my cousin! Despite this, we've actually never met. It's weird, I know. I'm going to crash his Jazz Forum.
Jum'aa Prayer -- Muslim Student Association | 12:45 | Wilder 221
Jum'aa Prayer is alternately led by the Muslim Student Association (MSA) advisor or by students. Though this is the central weekly prayer, the MSA prayer room is always open to students.
Valuation of Health for Public Policy, by Sylvia Brandt '92 | 4:30pm | King 239
An interesting talk, sponsored by the Economics department on public health and chronic illness.
TGIF | 4:30 to 6:30 | Wilder Bowl
TGIF is a celebration of the end of the week. Especially with the weather changing, Wilder Bowl becomes a festival with live music, hula hooping, sunbathing, reading and juggling.
Shabbat Service - Hillel | 5:30pm | Kosher-Halal Co-op (Talcott Hall)
Celebrate Shabbat with Hillel, service at 5:30, and tasty Kosher-Halal food at 7:00
Pizza Night | 6:20 | Every Co-op (Harkness, Keep, Pyle, Fairchild, Tank, Third World)
Hurray for Pizza Night, the best night of the week! Each co-op hosts a pizza night, with homemade delicious pizza with crazy toppings. Each co-op insists that theirs is tops, on merits of sauce, toppings, dough, so you can't go wrong here. Be aware, there will be a rush for the pizza, so get your sharp elbows out.
Large Group Worship - Oberlin Christian Fellowship | 7:00 | Barnard Lounge
Oberlin Christian Fellowship is an awesome group -- the large group worship sessions are always incredibly inviting and welcoming, no matter your denomination.
Dandelion Romp: Contra Dance | 7:30 | Hales
Black River Ironworks and Magic Foot play gorgeous music at 8:00, with a beginners' lesson at 7:30. Not sure about what Contra is? Answers here.
Oberlin Green Dreams Fashion Show | 8:00 | Finney Chapel
This event will be crazy. Finney will be transformed into a style laboratory, staging a fashion shoot to showcase student designs.
Professional Improv Troupes | 8:00 | Cat in the Cream
The Upright Citizens Brigade Tour Company, Rare Bird Show, and The Irish Mutts make some funnies at the Cat. If you have a face that moves, this show will make it smile.
Contemporary Music Ensemble | 8:00pm | Warner Concert Hall
The CME will blow your mind. Original new music, performed by amazing student musicians. Including Kyle Gann's excellently titled "The Disappearance of All Holy Things from this Once So Promising World" and Oberlin student Mark Poliks' "nursing home."
Stargazing at the Observing Deck | 9:00 | Peters Hall
As we have minimal air and light pollution in Oberlin, you can see the stars! You can either walk up to North Fields and take a gaze, or you can go to the Observatory in Peters and take a peek through fancy telescopes.
Asian Pop Night | 10:00 | Sco
Free bubble tea, and amazing Asian pop. In the words of Gerald, "WHERE HAS THIS BEEN ALL MY LIFE?!" Check out the requests here .
Parties! | 11:00 - 4:00 | Around Town
It's a weekend and Oberlin has a huge student band scene. Let there be dancing.
Sleep | Sometime | Somewhere
Others have recommended that you do this.
SUNDAY | April 18th
Tip 2: It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems just with potatoes.
Sunday is when we rest and do all the homework we blew off on Friday and Saturday. On Mondays, there's coffee, classes, and learning to do.
I would go on a scavenger hunt in town to find: amazing pancakes, the Arboretum, kittens, vintage clothes, the bike path, the Frank Lloyd Wright house, and the Nature Conservancy.
Open Folk Acoustic Jam | 12:00(noon) | Sco
Generally, jamming just sort of happens. Like breathing. But sometimes, we get official. Bring guitars, fiddles, and yourselves.
Earth Day Celebration | 12:00 (noon) to 5:00 pm | Tappan Square
Information about different environmental groups, skillshares, a co-op cook-off competition at 12:45, a speaker, and bands. Bluegrass, hip hop, funk, ska, jazz, blues-rock and a touch of hardcore are all expected to be in attendance. More information from Sam!
Arthur Dann Piano Competition | 1:00 | Finney Chapel
Like American Idol for pianists, but with less voting and Ellen Degeneres.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu | 7:00 | Hales Gym
A class led by the excellent (and linguistically perverse) Matt Chaves, teaching you how to defend yourself and your friends. Warning: exhausting.
Sprung | 7:00 | Warner
Student Dance Show!
The Hurt Locker | 7:00 | Apollo
Best Picture Award winning film, written by Oberlin alum Mark Boal '95. Part of the Apollo Film Fest!
Sundays in the Park with George | 8:00 | Little Theater
Theater shows like this sell out in lickety-split. But if you can get to the top of the line, it'll be totally worth the wait.
Game Night | 8:00 | Root Room
Meet other prospies and play games!
Swing Dance | 8:00 | Asia House - Shipherd Lounge
Small, chill swing dance. A great place to learn.
Storytelling Workshop | 9:00 | Wilder 112
I'm teaching a storytelling workshop with improv theater games, clowning lessons, and tricks to tell crazy stories. Make friends so you can bring them to my workshop.
Chillin' and workin' | 10:00 | Everywhere
It's a Sunday, and there's homework afoot.
And the worst thing? There's a million other things out there to do. Just say, "Hi! I'm a prospie!" and adventures are yours.
