{ College Orchestra! (not our official name) }

Here's some exciting news: the Oberlin College Arts and Sciences Orchestra got chartered this week! Basically, this means that we are now an official student organization. Among other things, that means that we're not going anywhere. Our founders are graduating this year, but this is going to provide us with the means to keep going. We'd have done that anyway, of course, but now we have more incentive.

This also means that we can do things like get money allocated to us each year. This is very exciting because, among other things, we'll now have money to pay for copying of music, receptions after performances, and printing posters. I'm a bit obsessed with the money thing right now, because I just wrote up our budget and submitted it for review. Hopefully we'll be getting lots of money. Or at least some money.

Since I wrote up the budget, I basically inadvertently became treasurer for next year, but I'm looking forward to it. The way I see it, I can give something back to the orchestra without having to be completely in charge. Just like with CSA, I fear having complete control. And by complete control, I mean complete responsibility.

At any rate, this semester's concert looks like it's going to be great, and next year is going to be just as good, or maybe even better!

And, in other news, Spring Break is less than a week away. I am incredibly excited.

Who conducts the orchestra? How does one become a member? How often do you rehearse?

It's conducted by a student from the Conservatory. To become a member, one simply has to express interest--everyone gets to play. There are auditions, but they're just for seating. Rehearsals are once a week.

I know I've talked about more details somewhere before, but I can't find the post right now. There's a bit more information here

Hi,I am an international student named Fu Rao. I am very interested in School orchestra and looking forward to joining it. I have passed the Level-8 examination for amateur players of clarinet. At that International Primary and High School Students’ Pipe Instruments Competition in Austria, I won a silver award. I think music is an inseparable part of every person’s life. It can lighten up our moods and cultivate our temperament. I am willing to participate in various student societies or organizations related with arts, especially orchestral music and bring more humanistic flavors to the Orchestra.

I sincerely hope I could get more information about the Orchestra. Who conducts the orchestra? How does one become a member? How often do you rehearse? May I have your email address? Thank you very much!

As I mentioned above, to become a member, you just get in touch with one of the organizers and express interest. The rehearsals are held once a week and are conducted by a student from the Conservatory.
