Life After Oberlin: New Blog

July 24, 2009

Daniel Tam-Claiborne ’09

Dear friends and readers of the past eight months,

I finally have my very own blog! You can check it out at Travel Breeds Content.

I'm still fiddling with the layout, but for the most part it is all set, with a handful of entries already underway. Think of it as essentially this blog (more long-form stories, anecdotes, photos), but with a slightly different focus. Now that I have graduated from my dear alma mater, I figured it was time to branch out a little on my own. Though I am not averse to continuing to post on the Oberlin Blogs site, since I am not in Oberlin anymore, a lot of my entries will inevitably be focused on things outside of my college experience. Having my own blog gives me that freedom to write about other aspects of my life, especially given that I will be in China for two years and want to do my best to keep in touch with friends and family while I'm abroad.

So, long story short, if you are a prospective student looking for the low-down on the Oberlin experience, you'll probably want to read my older entries or check out those of other great bloggers on the site. If for one reason or another you have taken an interest in my life (or what life might be like in rural China and East Asia), feel free to come along for the ride. Even if I don't know you personally (are there people who read my blog who I don't personally badger myself?), believe me, I always appreciate the readership.

Not surprisingly, even on my new blog, I find myself writing about Oberlin constantly. It should make sense, given that my next two years will be shaped by Oberlin Shansi, as the rest of my life will be by my four years at Oberlin. It is rare that what I see or do is not in some ways connected to something I've learned or have been exposed to at college. My Oberlin experience has shaped the way I perceive the world around me, and especially how I write about it.

Thanks for taking the time out to check out this blog every now and then (between you and me, I know that I wasn't the best at updating regularly). I am still more than happy to be a resource and answer any questions as best I can. The comments and feedback have meant incalculably much to me. After all, this is the kind of thing I might want to do with the rest of my life, or at the very least keep up in my spare time. Trying to be a writer is tough, but I guess you've got to start somewhere, huh?

I'll miss you Oberlin, but I hope to see some of you on the start of this new journey!

Sincerely,
Daniel
