The Winter Term Photo Album

May 18, 2010

At Oberlin College, we have a Winter Term. Winter Term is the time for students to do one project for the entire month of January. For many of us, it's a time to get out of town and have wild adventures. For others, it's a time to focus on the thing they've always wanted to do but never had the chance to.

It's hard to represent the totality of Winter Term. Students travel all across the globe: they climb mountains, bike across countries, and work in offices. They sleep on couches, they live at home, they camp out, stay in hostels, and couchsurf. They go everywhere. They do everything.

It's hard to get a holistic image.

And for some students, it's difficult to choose a project.

Some folks already know, months and months in advance, what they want to do: that internship with Time Magazine, the trip to Ireland to complete their honors research, building a bike with their younger siblings... But for others, it feels as if there are too many choices and no guidelines.

People who have trouble making decisions? This is for you.

In order to get an idea of the scope of Winter Term projects, we asked students to submit photos -- this is a collection of what we received. Photos range from the top of Kilimanjaro to the Mad River Valley in Vermont; Prague to Washington, DC; Seattle to Oberlin. They're postcards, Facebook pictures, souvenirs, and slices of life. And all together, they make a nice album.

Here it is: The Winter Term Photo Album!

Go there. It's pretty cool.

NOTES:

  • Harris, in his great heart, created it -- Ben, Cary, and Cindy helped make it happen. Even when I was extraordinarily vague and frustrating, Harris understood what I meant.
  • For my list of amazing Winter Term projects, go here, or read more stories about Winter Term here.
  • Get prepared to plan your own project. (You can get money from the Winter Term board to help fund your idea!)
  • The album is not complete, nor is it the clearest reflection of all that Obies do. It's much nicer to take photos when you're traveling, versus when you're sitting in a lab all day. If you want to be represented, send us your photos! Contact here!
